Any pump which is capable of moving ‘dirty’ water, by which we may mean greywater, water waste, pond water or muddy water, we call a dirty water pump. On this blog we wil be mainly interested in low voltage or 12v <a href="http://12vwaterpump.co.uk/dirty-water-pump/when-i-use-the-baracuda-in-our-pool-it-pumps-the-dirty-water-right-back-in-why" title="When I use the "baracuda" in our pool, it pumps the dirty water right back in …why ?">dirty water pumps. These may me used for pumping household greywater, for example but some higher wattage dirty water pumps wil also be capable of clearing dirty water including solids up to 18mm diameter from footings and ditches.

The Euroflow slurry pumps can handle the harshest types of conditions and move almost any type of materials quickly and efficiently, but that’s way out of the league for anything low voltage.

Question about the Shurflo 12v Water Pump

I would use this pump to pump water intermittently through a solar panel. Typically this would be 10 secs on and 30 secs off. The pump will be pumping water up to the panel so it is important that during the off phase water does not flow back through the pump. Would this be the case?

As with any pump, there is some CO2 release but I find it’s fairly minimal – certainly nothing I’ve had to worry about. I will continue to use my Shurflo as it will get more use than any other larger, more powerful pump. And being 12v all you need is an old battery and it is also eminently portable as well as safe.

I require a solar cluster and a small dc water pump.

The idea is to use black pipe as a solar heat collector and pump it through a swimming pool driven by the solar powered dc pump.

The object is to raise the water temperature over a period and maintain it at a higher level than normal thus extending the pool usage/ holiday season in Portugal, Algarve.

Could you recommend equipment for test purposes. Doesn’t need much lift –say 2 metres and volume throughput need not be much -say 100 galls/hr

Is that a solar powered water pump or a 12v water pump for a solar heated pool?

Use the small pump from the windshield washer. It works from the cars battery, so it should work off your solar panel. I’m not sure how much it puts out per minute, but it can’t be much.

I am looking to purchase one for a ~100 gallon pond and I would like it to be strong enough to make a small waterfall. Does anyone have any reccomendations on a brand?

How high is the waterfall and how many gallons per minute (gpm) do you need? If either of those answers are large, it will require an expensive pump and lots of solar panels to meet your head and flow requirements.

If you are trying to lift under 12′, and about 3gpm, the Shurflo pump might do it for you. It’s just over $100 for the pump, but then you’d need to buy the solar panel for around $500.

http://www.altestore.com/store/Solar-Water-Pumps/Surface-Pumps/Shurflo-Surface-Pumps/Shurflo-2088-443-144-12V-Std-Surface-Pump/p1088/

Some of the less expensive options you may find elsewhere may not have enough power to pump the water up for the waterfall, they may only have about 1′ or 2′ of head capability .
