Solar Powered Water Pump for Solar Heating

A Solar powered water pump is usually but not always found as a component in solar heating systems. Solar powered heating systems use a panel mounted on a roof with black pipes that retain radiant heat from the sun and heat up water inside the pipes. The heated water is then taken to  reservoir tank and replaced with cooler water ready to be heated again. The water from the tank can then be used to heat room spaces or to raise the temperature of mains water before being heated for use as hot water, or for a central heating system. So free energy from the sun is used to reduce the amount of fossil fuel energy required to supply a building with hot water or heating.

Anybody who is concerned enough to implement such an environmentally beneficial system is also likely to want to reduce any reliance on mains electricity for powering the pump that is used to circulate the water in the system and this is where the solar powered water pump comes into it. The solar powered water pumps are driven by low voltage direct current electricity (12v water pump) which is generated by a small photo-voltaic panel, often mounted near the big solar water heater panels. Instead of having copper wire coils as is usual with Alternating Current pumps, the solar powered water pump has fixed magnets, which do not require electricity themselves, and are constructed in a robust and efficient way in order to produce enough pumping power with very little current.

Solar Powered Water Pump Applications

Now that we have learned how a solar powered water pump is used in a solar powered water heating system, we will be able to find a source of these 12v water pumps and be able to use them in other situations where it is required to pump water around a system, and there is no mains electricty available or desired. For example, to raise water from a river or stream for irrigation purposes, although a very good filtration system would need to be placed before the pump since these solar powered water pumps are really only designed for closed loop water systems.

Solar Powered Cider Workshop

Another application might be for storing and decanting cider or fruit juice in situ on an apple orchard or fruit farm, where the cider workshop is isolated from mains electricity. The storage tanks could be emptied or racked using a solar powered water pump allowing the entire cider making process to take place at the orchard in the workshop instead of transporting the apples or juice to the main farmhouse or cider barn for processing.
